Murray’s big game fuels Oklahoma against Iowa State
Kyler Murray threw for 348 yards and three touchdowns as Oklahoma avenged last year’s loss to Iowa State with a 37-27 win over the Cyclones in Ames.
The Sooners started fast, scoring the game’s first 10 points thanks in part to a 75-yard touchdown pass from Murray to Marquise Brown. The Cyclones responded with a field goal early in the second quarter, followed by a 51-yard touchdown pass from Zeb Noland to Hakeem Butler 23 seconds later (after an Oklahoma fumble). Noland, playing in place of injured starter Kyle Kempt, finished the game 25-of-36 passing for 360 yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to Butler, who caught five passes for 174 yards.
Not to be outdone, Murray closed out the second quarter with two more touchdown passes, giving the Sooners a 24-10 lead at halftime. And while the Cyclones got within seven points on two separate occasions in the second half, a second consecutive upset of the Sooners wasn’t in the cards.
Iowa State fell to 0-2 with the loss and will face Akron next week before continuing a grueling Big 12 schedule against three Top 25 opponents in as many weeks (TCU, Oklahoma State, and West Virginia). Oklahoma will face Army next week as the Sooners look to stay unbeaten.
Longhorns overcome slow start to upset Trojans
Tom Herman and Texas overcame a slow start to rout No. 22 USC 37-14 in front of a school-record crowd of 103,507 at DKR Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The win was the 900th in Texas program history and saw the Longhorns outscore USC program 34-0 in the second and third quarters.
Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger passed for 223 yard and two touchdowns and ran for another while the Texas defense stifled the USC rushing attack, holding the Trojans to minus-5 yards on the day. USC quarterback JT Daniels finished the day with 322 yards passing, but the Trojans couldn’t overcome the lack of rushing offense as they dropped to 1-2 on the season.
Texas will look to carry momentum into its in-state showdown with No. 17 TCU next week while USC will face undefeated Washington State on Friday.
Syracuse stays undefeated with upset of FSU
Syracuse held Florida State to just 240 yards of offense and backup quarterback Tommy DeVito completed 11 of 16 passes for 144 yards and a score as Syracuse topped Florida State 30-7 at the Carrier Dome. With the win, the Orange are off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2015. The victory also marked Syracuse’s first in an ACC conference opener since the program joined the league in 2013.
Syracuse’s starting quarterback, Eric Dungey, left the game due to injury late in the second quarter, but the Orange didn’t miss a beat under DeVito, who also ran for a touchdown. The Orange scored the game’s first 23 points and never looked back, as FSU’s offense could never find its groove. Seminoles quarterback DeAndre Francois finished the game 18-of-36 for 178 yards and one interception. The Orange also held Florida State to 1-of-14 on third down for the afternoon.
FSU will look to right the ship against Northern Illinois next week before continuing ACC play against Louisville on September 29. Syracuse looks to stay undefeated as the Orange face UConn before traveling to No. 3 Clemson.
Mistakes cost TCU against Ohio State
Ohio State scored three touchdowns in a four-minute stretch of the third quarter Saturday, turning a eight-point deficit into a 12-point lead in the Buckeyes’ 40-28 win over TCU at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
In Ohio State’s final game without head coach Urban Meyer — and with star defensive lineman Nick Bosa nursing a groin injury on the sidelines — TCU looked to be in control after taking a 21-13 lead early in the second half. However, Parris Campbell started the Buckeyes’ rally by taking a short pass from Dwayne Haskins, Jr. 63 yards to the house, and just over a minute later, Dre’Mont Jones returned an interception 28 yards for a score to put the Buckeyes back on top.
TCU’s next drive ended with a blocked punt, which gave the Buckeyes the ball at the Horned Frogs’ 25, and two plays later, K.J. Hill hauled in a 24-yard touchdown pass to extend the Ohio State lead.
Haskins finished the game 24-of-38 passing for 344 yards and two touchdowns, while TCU quarterback Shawn Robinson completed 24 of 40 passes for 308 yards and a score and Darius Anderson had 154 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the Horned Frogs.
Meyer will be back on the sidelines as Ohio State takes on Tulane next week, while TCU faces Texas in Austin in its first Big 12 conference matchup of the season.
